For my February 2023 vacation I decided to try a vacation in Cancun, Mexico. I have an app for my VR Headset named Wander, which is like the VR version of Google Maps Street View. Between Google Maps, Wander and online research I was able to thoroughly explore the hotel zone and pick a few hotels to look for a room.
One thing that I discovered while doing research was that the beaches on the part of the hotel zone facing east can get some large waves. This doesn’t make it ideal for swimming if the conditions are bad.
I got the impression that the section of the hotel zone that was in the cove behind the Punta Cancun LightHouse (Faro de Punta Cancún) would have some protection from the waves from the ocean to the east. I hoped it would make the water a little calmer and better for swimming. I was able to find a room on sale at Hotel RIU Cancun, which was right on Playa Caracol. It turns out that I was correct about the waves and swimming.

With a view to the east I had a feeling the sun rise could be beautiful. I made a point on most mornings to wake up and take some photos.
The pool at RIU Cancun is fantastic! In fact, this was one of the reason I decided to stay at this hotel. One of the pools has a swim up bar which was just as good as I had hoped.
Although the hotel had several good restaurants, I ended up going the “hotel zone town” near Hooters Cancun, The City and Senor Frog’s. Senor Frog’s is one of the most fun bars that I had even been at.
