Turtles and Sharks on Molasses Reef

For this year’s trip to Key Largo I got a GoPro Hero 3 for my underwater video camera. Overall I am very happy with the purchase and the quality of the video. The battery did pretty well lasting through the dives especially since I was using the LCD screen attachment. I learned to turn it off at times throughout the dive to conserve battery power for the good sightings. I was able to change the battery at lunch on the dock between trips rather than on the boat between tanks.  This was a good thing!

Between the low visibility and my poor skills with the camera the video I shot on Wednesday was pretty bad. I ended up deleting all but one of the clips.

On Thursday, June 13th the visibility improved as did my skill with the camera and my luck. We spotted two sea turtles on the morning dive to Molasses Reef. The first one was a Green Sea Turtle.

Later on we spotted another turtle which looks like a Hawksbill Turtle.

My luck got even better as we spotted a small Black Tip Reef shark.

I even got to see a small Nurse Shark swim by.

This turned out to the the best day for shark and turtle sightings!
